Being a parent is always a mixture of joys and challenges, and all parents have days when they wish their children came with an owner’s manual. Without further ado, let’s examine some parenting tactics that can prove useful in your day to day experiences as a parent.

One of the most important things you can do as a parent is spend time with your kids. This means individual attention, apart from time spent as a family or with other kids or adults. This should be a time as distraction free as possible, not while the TV is on or while you or your child is in the middle of another activity. You can do almost anything that the child enjoys including playing a game with them or flying a kite. You do this to not only make them feel better, but to make sure they are okay. Visiting with your kids, and staying in touch, is an important part of parenting that both of you will appreciate. There are many ideas about the best way to discipline children, but it all really comes down to making them realize that breaking the rules has consequences. Many parents will use similar techniques including giving their kids a timeout or telling them they cannot watch television. When it comes to setting up rules in the house, it’s best to only create rules that you intend to consistently enforce. Your rules cannot be enforced because of your mood as this will make their administration haphazard at best. If you want your children to be responsible, and to have some structure to their lives and their choices, you need to be consistent.

Yelling at your kids is probably the worst thing you can choose to do, as there are many alternatives to this particular reaction. We are all imperfect people, therefore occasionally we will slip up and yell from day to day. Just do not make a habit of screaming at your children as it may backfire on you later on. For one thing, your kids may get used to it, and you’ll find that yelling is the only way to get their attention. Since kids naturally tend to mimic what they see and hear, they’ll also be likely to become loud, which can cause problems for them in school and other public places. Instead of yelling, speak very softly so that your children will have to quiet down to listen to what you say. Your personality, and the personality of your child, will play a large role in your relationship as you both grow older. Depending upon the child,
some will need more discipline, and others less. So, while it’s good to study various parenting theories and know what the experts recommend, in some ways you have to base your own parenting style on your own children and situation.
